The best job on earth (or what I watch on a bad day)

I have a friend who, rather than watching television, spends evenings trawling through YouTube for fun videos. I have to admit, I never spent much time on the site. Sometimes my brother — who apparently doesn’t have a lot to do — will send me a link to something funny. Or that he thinks is funny.

Still, it was an enlightening experience because I think I found the man who has the best job on earth. He is Tom Dickson, the chairman and CEO of BlendTec, which makes upmarket blenders. Very upmarket — they range from about $500 to over $1,000 each. Dickson is best known for his Will it Blend videos in which he takes a variety of objects to see if the blenders will, indeed, blend them without breaking. There are about 100 of these videos experimenting with a variety of objects and substances — from the iPhone 4S to Superglue, each more amusing than the last.

I didn’t know that Dickson was the CEO when I first saw the videos. I thought he was a guy hired to try to break the blenders who took his job very seriously but still had a great sense of humor. I still think the last part is true, and I bet if you asked Dickson what part of his job he liked best, blending golf balls, marbles, glow sticks, Spam or whatever else is suggested by Facebook fans would be at the top. I wonder what his favorite blend was? Maybe the Bailout.

Being a thoughtful sister, I sent a link to the site to my brother. I figured he’d be at least as enamored of it as I am, being he’s male and therefore gets a lot more pleasure out of destruction than I do. He liked the Eepybird sticky notes video more — surprising because it’s arty, not destructive. On a bad day, Will it Blend is my version of baby animal videos.

So take a look. And your welcome.

  1. Your writing is good enough to get me through a post on a guy who blends iphones. Now that’s good. Gotta love the Wordcount blogathon. I’m happy to be on the journey with you.
