Dear President Obama,

I want to thank you for making such a gracious victory speech tonight. Four years ago, after John Kerry lost, I wrote a letter to President Bush and Vice President Cheney asking them to remember that they were leaders of all Americans, not just the Republicans who elected them. Bush later gave a speech talking about spending his “political capital”, a message I took to mean that they were going to govern from the right, for the right and the rest of us be damned. The previous four years seem to have borne out my fears.

The fact that you understand that this is one country, and we should be one people — albeit of many opinions — makes me believe you will be a president of a different stripe than we have had in at least eight years. And although I am thrilled that you won and that we have congressional majorities in two houses — I have high hopes that we can undo many of more frightening things done during the last two terms — I am heartened that you are thinking not just of your political allies, but of all the people of this nation.

I feel such naches. Now go to work.

Best regards,

Lisa
