I can remember a few birthday parties that are worth mentioning, like the one when I was 9, a pizza party (I had a lot of those) and we left my friend Paula at the pizza parlor. Or my 21st at UC Davis when we were loud enough to get a visit from the cops. Ten years ago I got in contact again with my childhood friend, Pam, whose art was hanging in the bakery where I was getting a birthday cupcake. I recognized the name and looked her up on the net and we reconnected. Her band the Castaways is playing at my party on Saturday. I think that’s worthy of making a list of good stuff that happened on June 12. But I think it’s the bad things that hold our focus. I’ll have to start keeping my own list over the second half of my life.

Do you have any great June 12 memories?

1381, 1418, 1429, 1550, 1653: a bunch of various battles in Europe.
